Beginning in May with Coachella and lasting until the end of September, the summer months have been newly dubbed "festival season." A trend that began in the 1960s, musical festivals have gained new popularity over the past few years, especially amongst young adults and teenagers. According to Nielsen Music, 32 million people attended at least one music festival in 2014. Music festivals are typically multi-day events, lasting anywhere from two days to two weeks. "I think music festivals are so popular because they offer a cheap price for a lot of musicians' sets," said Columbia High School student, Harry Ehlers, '18. As opposed to a single-artist concert, music festivals feature many artists throughout the day, with one or two headlining artists playing each night. With one ticket/pass to a music festival, one can see many performances for about the same cost as a typical concert. "Rather than spending 100 dollars to see one band play a concert, you can pay the same amount to see about 16 musicians play one to two hour sets," said Ehlers. Music festivals allow one to see a variety of artists and explore new music in one location.

Music festivals, however, are not only about the music. "The environment of music festivals is the real appeal," said Ehlers. Festival goers can also enjoy other activities like visiting food trucks and outside vendors. "There are a variety of trendy food options, games, sponsored booths, vendors and fun festival attire that everyone can enjoy," added Ehlers. Although festival tickets are relatively cost effective for the number of artists one is able to see, these other activities can come at a hefty price. Even so, many festival goers are willing to pay the price for this unique experience.

With the rising popularity of music festivals has come a market for festival fashion. Inspired by vintage fashion and the styles of the sixties and seventies, many attendees take the opportunity of music festivals to make bold fashion choices. Every year, blogs and articles are dedicated to tracking and reporting celebrities' Coachella outfits. Clothing brands produce and market festival inspired pieces. For some, finding their "festival look" is equally important as seeing their favorite artists.

Governors Ball, June 1-3
Summer Stage, select dates from June to October

2018 has already promised to be one of the biggest years for blockbusters. With Black Panther storming the box offices in February and Avengers: Infinity War in April, movie fans are excited for what is to come in the summer months. Marie Fagan, ‘18, said, “I always look forward to summer pictures. Throughout the year, all of the trailers advertise movies for the summer.” This is true because movie companies release films just before the Oscar judging cut-off date to ensure better award nominations. This summer seems to be sequel season. Well-advertised and long-awaited sequels will be dominating the theatres this summer.

Incredibles 2 releases June 15 and fans seem excited. Fagan says, “I’m so pumped because this film is supposed to feature Elastigirl.” Pixar announced in 2015 that a sequel would be produced and fans have been waiting for years for its arrival. Holly Haines, ‘18, says, “I feel like I have been waiting a really long time for the movie to finally be released. I’ve seen so many trailers circulating on social media.” The original Incredibles was released in 2004 but fans can at last expect another this coming summer.

This summer will also feature more sequels. Deadpool 2 was released on May 18, Solo: A Star Wars Story is going to be released on May 25, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is going to be released on June 22, Sicario 2: Solado is going to be released on June 29, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is going to be released on July 20, and Mission: Impossible- Fallout is going to be released on July 27. However, “...sequels are always tricky because there is more pressure for them to live up to the hype of the original,” commented Fagan.

Another awaited movie to be premiered is the new Marvel movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp to be released on July 6. The movie is featuring actors Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. An action-adventure film, The Spy Who Dumped Me featuring Mila Kunis and Justin Theroux is set to release on August 3. Ocean’s 8 features film stars like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, with Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter that is going to be a female powerhouse heist released on June 8. With plenty of films to look forward to this summer 2018, movie goers should get their tickets ready.
